Sick of Turkey? Here are 5 Awesome Thanksgiving Alternatives!

While Thanksgiving dinner is traditionally turkey time, this big bird isn’t to everyone’s taste! At The Shores, we say that you only live once – and that means you deserve a Thanksgiving meal that’s delicious in every way. Here are some alternative ideas to traditional turkey dinners from our assisted living team in Cape May County to tempt your tastebuds, wow your guests and keep your table as festive as ever.

#1 – Roast Pork Loin with Pancetta and Sage

If you want an entree with the big roast appeal of a turkey that’s bursting with flavor, juicy, and tender, then this is a great option. Pork loin, a crowd-pleasing favorite that ticks all the boxes as a special holiday meal, is substantial enough to satisfy any appetite! This recipe is by one of the queens of cooking, Martha Stewart, so it’s tried-and-tested as well as being impressive to serve to all your guests.

#2 – Cranberry Pot Roast

If you find turkey too dry and uninspiring, you’ll love this tender, juicy pot roast recipe! This  surprisingly easy recipe (although there is considerable cooking time, so plan ahead) delivers a rich and warming wintery feast. The cranberries and port turn into a thick, luxurious sauce and the finished product pulls apart for easy serving. It is the perfect accompaniment to mashed potatoes and will quickly become your family’s favorite turkey alternative.

#3 – A Seafood Feast

Did you know that lobster was served at the First Thanksgiving in 1621? That’s a pretty good reason to put seafood on the menu! Don’t worry, because  lobster isn’t your only option. We love this recipe for a whole roasted salmon with orange butter glaze. It’s fancy, it’s festive and it’s much easier than it looks, which is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to spend their whole day in the kitchen.

#4 – Individual Stuffed Acorn Squash

Fall and Thanksgiving are synonymous with some of the best vegetables of the year, so why not make them a centerpiece for your Thanksgiving dinner? This recipe for individual stuffed acorn squash is a wonderful combination of earthy squash, sweet apples, herbs, maple syrup, and cornbread stuffing, bringing all the best flavors of the fall together. And because these are all such seasonal items, you’ll have no trouble finding all the best ingredients in your local stores.

#5 – Cornish Game Hens

Want this year’s Thanksgiving to be extra special? Individual Cornish game hens are a wonderful option for a grown-up Thanksgiving dinner, providing a real wow-factor for your guests. They’re simpler to make than you think and cook much faster than turkey or large cuts of meat because of their smaller size. This is a great recipe that combines these flavorful birds with morels, leeks and dry Riesling for a crispy, juicy result.

The Jersey Shore in November – Still Active!

One of the best-kept secrets about Ocean City, New Jersey is that it has so much to offer even in the coldest and quietest months of the year. Year-round activity makes it such a great place for seniors and families, and also for residents at  The Shores,  one of the best assisted living communities in Cape May County! Here’s some ideas for what to do at the Jersey Shore in November.

Midcentury New Jersey: The Garden State in the 1950s

Ready for a real blast from the past? Come and explore what the Garden State was like in the Atomic age! This trip down memory lane is a perfect event for families to share with senior loved ones, exploring what the USA looked like back in the day. It’s hosted at the Cornelius Low House/Middlesex County Museum, one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in the state, and admission is free!

Ask a Geologist: Geologic Wonders of Iceland

Are your parents fans of the natural world and adventurous travel? Get to know the wonders of Iceland’s unique and stunning geology with a one-on-one presentation from a leading specialist, Dr. Tamie Jovanelly, Associate Professor of Geology at Berry College. This is an online event, so you don’t have to go far, and there’s a Live Q&A after the talk, too. You can tune in on a smart TV, laptop or tablet by visiting this website on November 6th from 1:00pm – 2:00pm.

Apple Picking

In Cape May County, you can still go apple picking in November at some wonderful local farms. You’ll support the community, have a great day out together and enjoy delicious treats like hot apple cider, home baked goods and, of course, apple pies! You can also pick up loads of fresh local produce and eat out, as most of the farms have restaurants and stalls. Stiles Farm and Nursery and the Allen Family Farm are some of the best spots to visit, offering fun for all ages.

Fall Crafts and Collectables

This event is a must for anyone who loves local crafts and collectables. It is due to be held on November 13th at the Cape May Convention Hall, 714 Beach Ave., from 10am-4pm. Spend a day with your family finding Thanksgiving and Christmas décor, gifts and goodies, as well as beautiful items for your home. If you’re looking for even more seasonal crafts, then check out the holiday crafts and collectables event on November 26th and 27th at the same venue.

Plan Carefully Due to COVID-19

Before you plan your day trip out with your family and loved ones, it is essential to confirm that the event is currently taking place. Due to COVID-19, there’s a lot of uncertainty whether or not public events can be held, so they may be cancelled at short notice. In addition, remember to follow important social distancing and hygiene procedures while you are out around Cape May County, and wear a mask!

At The Shores, we know just how lucky we are to be in beautiful Cape May County. With the many activities the area offers for seniors and families, and our own unique geographic access to the beach, bay, boardwalk, and recreational areas, our assisted living community really does offer residents great quality of life, even in November. Just remember to wrap up well and treat yourself to a nice, hot cocoa, and you’ll have the time of your life!

In its continuing mission to bring the “Abundant Life” to New Jersey’s senior citizens, United Methodist Communities at The Shores in Ocean City New Jersey, has partnered with WSI to deliver website management, Search Engine Marketing, and content development services. The goal is to enhance brand recognition for The Shores in southern NJ and drive awareness of UMC’s unique offering in the Assisted Living Community marketplace around the state.  (https://theshores.umcommunities.org)

WSI had developed the rebranded website and consulted on the design and development of the ongoing online marketing program, which is focused on SEO and statewide brand recognition.  New marketing initiatives include both paid search and organic search optimization, custom content creation, and ongoing paid advertising initiatives for the Community.

Marketing United Methodist Communities At The Shores

As long-standing experts in the digital marketing associated with assisted living and senior care services across the country, WSI has helped dozens of local assisted living facilities and nursing homes find new clients in their local area’s. Key to the rise in occupancy attributed to WSI efforts, is both the increase in visibility and the compelling content produced by WSI that understands the unique selling proposition of the brand. Crafting this messaging and bringing out the best UMC has to offer has been instrumental to creating a sales funnel through their digital properties that exceeded all previous attempts at digital marketing.

To market Assisted Living at The Shores, all unique services and aspects of the facility must be analyzed and presented. This coupled with a deep understanding of the types of clients that use or influence the use of assisted living, and their buying journey, allows us to craft content and programs that keep the brand in the right places, in the right way, at the right time.

WSI markets independently all of the senior care services available at the shores including Alzheimer’s and memory carehospice carerespite care, rehabilitation and nursing home services in New Jersey.

The WSI Assisted Living Marketing Model

WSI Brand development services for this client includes advanced SEO services as part of its “Semantic Mapping” approach to on-page SEO.  With this approach a comprehensive study of local product demand is conducted and mapped into a strategic architecture for the company website and all company web properties.  Quality Blog, graphic and video content is created and syndicated on external web properties including TumblrWordPress and BlogSpot in addition to dozens of other social media and content hubs.

WSI’s Elite Regional Branding program is comprehensive.  By carefully customizing this content strategy through on-page and off-page activities, WSI has achieved amazing results through a highly conservative approach that has proved resistant to changes in Google’s search algorithm’s and even improved client visibility as less reputable SEO approaches cause competitors to disappear from Search Engine Visibility.

For further details on WSI’s capabilities and strategies around the marketing of assisted living communities, or more generally around SEO, SEM, Paid Search, and content programs, please contact us for a free analysis and consultation.
